4 Custom Home Additions to Add More Space

Custom home additions such as a sunroom are a great way to add space to your home.

A custom home addition is an excellent way to add more space for you and your family. As families expand and change, adding a room or converting a garage can be an ideal way to allow your house to change with you. There are about four common home additions you should consider if you’re looking to customize your home.

Conventional Home Addition

This home addition is one of the more extensive addition options. A conventional home addition is a multi-room structure built onto the side of a house, and open to the main house. When constructed well, this add-on naturally blends into the home as a whole.

Building a conventional house addition is essentially like adding a new mini house onto yours, which means it would be quite an undertaking. However, this option may be best for multi-generational families who intend to live together for several years, at least.

Room Addition, or “Bump Out”

This custom home addition is a single room structure built onto the side of the house. This single room is meant for one function, often as a bedroom. It can also be used to expand the size of an existing room.

These types of additions are less intensive than the conventional house addition, but it will still be subject to building codes, permits, and inspectors.

Sunroom

A sunroom addition is often a supplemental living area on the side of the house. A sunroom is usually closed off from the main house, separated by doors. Sunrooms are a slightly less complicated custom home addition and often made from pre-fabricated materials such as aluminum and thermal-resistant glass.

Because sunrooms are not recognized as year-round permanent living structures, some features are permitted here that would not be allowed in a conventional addition. For example, sunrooms can be built with oversized glass or other window styles that are not allowed in a conventional addition. Sunrooms are also not required to have heating or air conditioning installed.

Garage Conversion

If you have a mostly unused garage, you may want to consider converting it into a living space. Garages are converted by adding flooring, replacing the garage door with a solid wall, and installing a ceiling. They then make excellent bedrooms, living rooms, or dens. However, converted garages can be difficult to blend in with the rest of the home, and you will need to install plumbing and HVAC.
