Windows are an essential part of any home, and not just because of their appearance. Your windows can make a huge difference in the effectiveness of your home’s heating and cooling system, for example. If your home is leaking hot or cold air, you are losing comfort as well as money. Old windows can also pose a safety risk and may even contribute to flooding or water damage. It can be difficult to determine when the best time to replace your windows is; however, if you notice the following signs, it’s time to install new home windows.
You Hear a Lot of Outside Noise
If your home windows provide little protection from the sounds of the outdoors, they may not be sealed correctly. When installing new windows, you can select double- or triple-pane glass insulated with Argon gas to decrease outdoor noise. This can be especially helpful for homes that sit within a busy neighborhood or along a busy road.
You Always Feel a Draft
Do you notice a breeze from your windows even when they’re closed? If so, there may be several issues, including poor window installation, faulty seals, and more. A drafty window can dramatically change the overall temperature of your home and require your HVAC system to work even harder to keep up with maintaining the temperature. When you install new home windows, you can get rid of those drafts and keep hot and cool air inside.
Windows Frames are Damaged or Soft
If you notice that your window frames are soft to the touch or physically damaged, it is likely that they cannot be repaired. Soft window frames indicate rot and water infiltration. They may start sagging if they haven’t already. If you notice this type of damage in your windows, it’s time for a replacement.
Difficulty Opening, Closing, and Locking Windows
If your old windows were not installed correctly, they might have developed balance issues which make the windows difficult to open and close. Windows that are rusting or rotting can be difficult to use, and if your windows do not close properly or cannot lock, this impacts the safety of your home.
Condensation Build-Up or Cracked Window Glass
If you notice that your windows frost between the layers of glass, it means that your seals have failed and are letting in moisture between the glass panes. Once the seal fails, any insulating gas used to make that window energy-efficient is gone. Cracked window glass can open up spots for air to leak in and out of your window, decreasing its efficiency and effectiveness.
